Nestled in the heart of central Greece, Meteora is an enthralling spectacle of natural beauty and human ingenuity. This UNESCO World Heritage site is well known for its soaring rock formations, which are topped by seemingly gravity-defying monasteries.
Once virtually impossible to reach, the monasteries are now widely accessible to every visitor. On our trip, we will have the chance to visit 2-3 monasteries:
- The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron/ of the Metamorfossis (Transfiguration of Jesus): Founded in the 14th century by Athanasios the Meteorite, this is the oldest and largest monastery of the complex and was also built on the longest and highest rock. Visitors to the monastery can admire the church of Transfiguration of Jesus as well as the Holy Altar. Make sure you also visit the old kitchen which has been converted into the monastery’s Folklore Museum with various exhibits including kitchen appliances and utensils.
- The Holy Monastery of Varlaam: Founded in the 14th century, this is the second largest monastery and was built on the rock opposite the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron. Visitors to the monastery can visit the impressive main church of the monastery dedicated to the worship of All Saints and enjoy the spectacular views from the top!
- The Holy Monastery of Agios Stefanos: The most accessible of all monasteries, it’s an ideal choice for visitors wanting to take in the complete Meteora experience without the strain of following steep paths or steps. Do not miss the chance to visit the Holy Altar which has been converted into an impressive museum housing some unique examples of church artifacts!
During our trip, we will stop at selected spots where you can enjoy awe-inspiring views or go on small leisurely walks. Wrap up the experience with a traditional Greek lunch in Kalambaka’s charming villages, blending nature and local flavors seamlessly.
