Day trip to Thessaloniki – City Tour

Embark on a captivating bus tour around Thessaloniki, where ancient history meets modern vibrancy. In just a few hours we will explore the city’s iconic landmarks and immerse ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry of this historic Greek metropolis!

Our tour starts with a stroll along Thessaloniki’s impressive waterfront and our first stops include the White Tower, the renowned monument and museum that stands as the city’s symbol, and the striking bronze equestrian statue of Alexander the Great crafted by Evaggelos Moustakas which also proudly holds the title of the tallest statue in Greece.

We continue our trip with a visit to the Arch of Galerius, affectionately known as “Kamara” among the locals. Originally part of the expansive Galerius complex, this architectural marvel consists of two remaining marble pillars adorned with intricately engraved martial scenes. Close to the Arch, the Rotunda of Galerius awaits, an enduring testament to Thessaloniki’s rich cultural history. Serving various religious purposes throughout the centuries, this ancient monument now holds a coveted place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as one of the 15 Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki.

Our next stop is at another UNESCO-designated marvel, the Basilica of St. Demetrius, Thessaloniki’s patron saint. Situated atop the ruins of the Roman bath where St. Demetrios endured imprisonment and martyrdom, this sacred site captivates visitors with its breathtaking Byzantine mosaics and intricate sculptural adornments. Delve into the crypt, transformed into a museum exhibition space, where St. Demetrios and early Roman Christians met their martyrdom.

Then, we venture into the charming old town of Ano Poli, where you can soak in the breathtaking views from the ancient Byzantine walls and the iconic Trigonio Tower. Delve deeper into history as you visit Heptapyrgion, a formidable 14th-century military fortress boasting seven towering bastions, also known as Yedi Koule. Finally, find tranquility amidst the urban bustle at the Vlatadon Monastery, the last remaining functioning Byzantine monastery in Thessaloniki.
